We are asking companies, groups and individuals to SIGN UP TO STRESS DOWN day on the 4th November 2009.

When do you take time to take a lunch break? We’re always rushing, never get round to reading that book or watching that movie all the way through so we’re encouraging people to take their proper lunchbreak on 4th November, move away from their desk, switch their ‘phone off and take a well-deserved indulgent break!

We’ll be hosting workshops in empty spaces with artists in situ who will teach you a new skill or help you develop an old one (venues and times TBC). And we will be sending out information packs early October to people who email - kerry_artfull@btconnect.com.

Stress related illness in the workplace costs UK businesses billions of pounds a year. And although stress itself is not an illness, if it becomes excessive or is prolonged then mental or physical problems may develop.

The fourth of November is National Stress Awareness Day and FPA is spearheading an awareness campaign across Birmingham aimed at reducing levels of the condition by promoting the benefits of arts in health.

The Charity is encouraging businesses to sign up to the scheme, which will also double as a fundraising campaign to subsidise community projects that will support vulnerable adults and young people.

Companies are being asked to encourage their staff to take a proper break during their workday on 4 November, and the Charity is offering to provide artists in situ for short workshops or full day events at very little cost.

We’re asking companies to make a contribution for the workshops and we will use that money to continue providing workshops and projects for excluded communities in the City. Alternatively companies can organise their own art event, such as a Christmas pantomime, and just make a donation to the Charity if they wish to do so.

While raising money would be a bonus for the vulnerable communities served by FPA, the main aim of the Charity’s campaign is to raise awareness of the causes of stress and the benefits of arts in health. “We want to encourage people to take a break from their usual routine, which could be beavering away at work, or staring at a TV set all day, and just do something different,” said Roseanne.

The general public is also invited to take part in the campaign. The Charity is negotiating with local authorities to take over high street shops during the week that includes
4 November. These shops will be turned into drop in art workshops, which will include a variety of art forms for everyone to try. These will be free to attend with donations being made at the participants’ discretion.

The Charity will also be producing a booklet on the benefits of arts in health.

To register for a fundraising pack, which includes fundraising ideas and posters, or to receive an information booklet on the benefits of art in reducing stress levels, email Kerry_artfull@btconnect.com.

Further details will be shown on the website so keep checking back!
